Taking Charge

I know it might sound ridiculous but I’ll ask anyway.

What would happen if every time you had a worrisome thought you could just burst it

     like a balloon?

Here’s the reason I’m asking.

Life can be difficult. Problems can arise unexpectedly.

Brain science research shows that our thoughts create chemicals.

Every bad thought releases chemicals that make you feel bad.

Every good thought releases chemicals that make you feel good.

You do not need to believe every thought you have – oftentimes thoughts lie.

You have to take control.

The problem is that we usually think we have no control over our thoughts.

How would you feel, though, if you had a plan?

A specific tool that you could use to burst those negative, anxious thoughts?

Well here’s an idea that has helped many folks.

Challenge those thoughts.

Yes, ask these questions-

    Is it true?

Can I absolutely know it’s true?

How do I feel when I have this thought?

What would I be without this thought?

Turn the thought around. Is that turnaround thought true? Is it even more true

         than the original thought?

Yes, you can learn to talk back to your thoughts.

Don’t believe every thought you have.

Burst those thought balloons by challenging them and asking those questions.

If you focus on what is true it will make all the difference in how you feel.

Sound good?

Give it a try and let me know how it goes for you.

Think on whatever is true, honorable, right, pure, excellent, good, worthy of praise-

Let your mind dwell on these things. (Philippians 4:8)

This Key Changes Everything

Change your thoughts –

Change your life.

Powerful thought. It’s right there for you.

But how difficult it is some days to simply change our thoughts.

We are surrounded with storms on every side and within.

Problems and conflict.

Loss and struggle.

You know what I mean.

If I were to write out the challenges of this past week

it would be too long to even want to print

and certainly not an encouragement for you or I.

No, you’re like me. We all face challenges.

Life is tough – no doubt about it.

But there’s a key. Remember. A key that changes everything.

Yes, that’s the key.

Our focus.

If we focus on the darkness of the storm, the pain of the struggle

the difficulty of our situation

we drag ourselves down into a pit of discouragement.

But if we focus on the blue sky- the positives that are all around –

the hope within and without

And most of all the God of all Hope and Comfort.

Life becomes easier.

The stronger our focus on the blue sky

that oftentimes is hidden behind the clouds

we are strengthened to go one step further.

And that’s where everything changes.

Taking that one step.

So how do we focus on the positive?

There are many ways  –

Read scripture, play music, talk with a friend, pray.

Those are just a few ideas and not in any particular order.

I also find that when I remember how I’ve been strengthened in the past

I am encouraged.

Yes, I can encourage myself and so can you.

A laser focus on the positive.

Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; Proverbs 4:6

Yes, change your thoughts and you’ll change your life.

Shining Moments

Powerful truth that changes lives!

Focus on the good

and the beautiful

and what is going well

and we will see more.

The other side is also true.

Focus on the negative

the disappointing

the ugly and tragic

and we will see more.

A friend of mine recently posted this stunning photo

of our Virginia countryside on Facebook.

It touched me

and reminded my again of why I love this area so much.

Beauty all over

Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.

although surrounded by beauty on every side

It is all too easy to not see it

to become blinded

as it were

in the routine of life

and the overwhelming challenges we all face.

Wherever you live

there is beauty to be found.

Just look

it’s there.

Those powerful words come to mind.

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true,

       whatsoever things are honest,

       whatsoever things are just,

       whatsoever things are pure,

        whatsoever things are lovely

        whatsoever things are of good report;

if there be any virtue and if there be any praise

       think on these things.”
 Have you tried it?

When I discipline my thoughts to focus on the true,

the lovely, the pure, etc.

it changes my perspective.

I see even more that is true, lovely, pure, etc.

It is sad but true that we can be surrounded by thousands of gifts

of beauty and goodness

but fail to see them.

So let’s open our eyes

let’s look all around us

and intentionally see what we can see.

All the while praising the One

Who has gifted us in so many ways.

Beauty all around us.

In the smile of a  child,

the song of a bird,

the rolling hillside

the kind action of a friend.

Beauty that shines brightly

reminding us that we are never alone.

There is One Who walks with us.
