Shining Moments

Some people want to have guns for protection.

Others trust in their Neighborhood Watch, or the police or another protection service.

But I have discovered something that is better than all of these.

The name of Jesus.

Months ago when all of a sudden our home began to rattle and shake

and I knew that there was danger.

        I whispered His Name.

Yes, that was the first thought that came to mind.

I was puzzled, scared, confused

        all wrapped into one.

I jumped to protect my girls from whatever was happening.

The One Who promises to always be there for me

“I am with you always…”Matthew 28:20

The One to Whom I ran for protection and safety

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death

I will fear no evil, for You are with me.” Psalms 23:4

Within seconds we raced down the stairs and outside

where a crowd of neighbors was gathering.

Looking back at our homes we watched

      Holding our breaths

          Holding each other

But in the midst of the earthquake

                       Jesus was there.

Then all was still.

We waited.

          and then begin to move.

An earthquake people said

My heart was still racing. It took me a long time to quiet.

But I realized again

the power of saying His Name

of calling out to the One and Only One

for help in time of need.

He tells us to come to Him all the time.

“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” James 4:8

He longs to have a personal relationship with each one of us

and every minute of the day.

 Whisper His Name.

Right where you are just now.

How precious is that Name.

Truly it is the sweetest Name in all the world.

No matter how you feel

      Say His Name

No matter what you are facing

      Speak His Name

Somehow in His amazing Love He draws near to us when we whisper His Name.

His Name gives us power in the midst of horrible tragedy

                    and unexpected terror

His Name gives us peace as we wait by the bedside of a sick one

 Jesus. Jesus. Jesus

There’s just something about that Name

His Name shines brighter than anything here on earth.

Lighting the Way for us to know Him.

It’s been a strange week. An earthquake on Tuesday left my daughters and I rattled and unnerved. Along with straightening pictures and sweeping up glass from the cherished broken crystal glasses we also sought ways to relax again in our home.

“I always thought I would be safe here,” my youngest spoke putting words to our deepest fear.

Even as she said it I sighed within. Would any of us ever feel safe again in our home?

“You are safe, honey,” I reassured giving her a squeeze, “because your safety is in the One Who holds you.

 Safe, no matter what.

My girls and I held each other close for a long time.

Gratitude filled our hearts as we saw buildings condemned and then torn down.

In only a few seconds a familiar deli is now permanently closed.

In only a few seconds sanctuary ceilings are cracked.

In only a few seconds school buildings were seriously damaged.

no lives were lost. Miraculously no one was hurt.

Once more neighbor stood beside neighbor watching with horror and waiting to see if their homes would crumble.

Shaking earthquakes have led to stronger relationships.

A big hug. A tender embrace there.  Phone calls of concern.

Hearts that look up in faith to the One Who Loves and understand maybe a little more that safety is only in Him. That’s how it’s always been. And that’s how it will always be.
