The One Thing You Can Control

Years ago I read this powerful quote:

“Two men looked out from prison bars, one saw the mud, the other saw the stars.”-Frederick Langbridge.

I am struck by its utter simplicity.

    By the powerful truth.

We all have that choice, don’t we?

What do we see when we look around?

Do we see glimpses of the holy?

Or constant reminders of the fallen nature of man?

Do we see potential for good?

Or do we see countless reminders of failure and hopelessness?

It’s a choice that we all must make.

Day after day. Hour after hour.

It is true that some personalities are more prone to see life as half full

    rather than half empty.

But still the choice is ours.

And how we choose makes a world of difference in what we not only see but what we continue to see.

This morning I went out for a nice run. It was a joy, not an every day routine for this single parent/homeschool teacher/professional.

Years ago I would have noted my time and run for the sheer pleasure of seeing how fast I could go.

But today my time is not that important.

The length that I go is not the main issue.

No, I only look to have joy in the run

    And today I did.

Birds were singing melodious praises

And puffy white clouds dotted the brilliant blue morning sky.

I found myself listening and looking,

    Praising and pondering

The gifts that surround me on every side.

By the time I came home my heart was full to overflowing.

Guess I will never be a serious runner

But I glimpsed a touch of heaven in that run today

And it will linger in my heart for a long time.

How about you?

What do you see all around you?

Stars or mud?

How about looking for the stars in the midst of the mundane and ordinary?

You were made to glorify and give praise.

Take some time today to look for the stars and to celebrate another day

  To live,

      To laugh,

         And to love.

And let me know what you experienced.

Have a glorious weekend, dear friends.

Bloom Anyway

My daffodils are bending in the chilling breeze today in Virginia. Even though the temperatures are less than ideal they brighten my world today with their beauty and grace.

How about you?

Life more often than not is less than ideal. Difficult situations. Words that hurt like chilling temperatures can often cause any one of us to bend low in pain.

But bloom anyway.

This world needs your brightness, your color, your beauty.

Yes, even though your particular situation today is hard, bloom anyway.

You have no idea who needs to see you today.

Your smile. Your words. Your presence gracing their lives.

You have no idea the difference you make.

So let the cold air blow.

Remember your time is now. Bloom brightly. Sing your special song.

Don’t ever forget that you are important.

Bloom anyway!!

“Rejoice and be glad”- Matthew 5:12

Set Your Focus

Problems abound on every side. Shootings. Deaths. Divorces. Bankruptcy. Illnesses.

It seems wherever you look there are more problems. So is it possible to stay focused on the good in the midst of the continual parade of problems?

And what happens if one can’t?

The challenges of life demand our best efforts, our utmost energies focused on solutions.

We must not allow the problems to distract us from what needs to be done today.

Problems drain energies and cloud thinking. Focusing on them pulls one down making it difficult to think clearly.

 Focus on the good!

That’s right. Begin to think about what is good in your life.

Grab a piece of paper and write it down.

Immediately, I think of a few.

Life. My God Who never changes.

Love in all its many splendors.

Music.

I’m beginning to write quicker as my thoughts push the problems to the background.

 Nature. Sunsets and sunrises.

Daffodils blooming in February.

Dogs that choose to rest beside you and nuzzle your hand.

 And on and on.

 Friends both near and far.

Surprises that break into our life as God’s special gifts.

Hope. Yes, there’s always hope. Always.

By focusing on what is true and good we begin to see more clearly. We begin to think more accurately. Life takes on a different hue and our attitudes change.

Choose to set your focus on the good today. Consider filtering out the negative.  No one needs to be bombarded constantly by problems particularly from the media.

Lift your thoughts up higher and rejoice.

We’re not Home yet. For now, let’s join hands and heart and keep singing.
