Shining Moments

Feb 8, 2013

I watched with surprise as she grabbed the package

and took off running after the man in dark clothing.

Out the door she raced

while I stood at the checkout counter watching.

Amazing!

Someone who cares in a world that often just moves on.

Ordinarily if someone forgets a bag

it is held for them until they come back.

Reasonable procedures.

But on this day

I was blessed by this employee who went beyond what was expected

and demonstrated initiative and care for the customer.

Yes, she gets my vote for Employee of the Year.

I wonder

how often do I miss an opportunity to do good

to go beyond.

It is all too easy to be pushed into the mold of our present age

But people have value

and I hunger to keep affirming life,

pulsating, caring life

wherever I see it.

When she stepped back behind the counter and continued

to ring up my purchases.

I spoke.

“Thank you,” I said wanting her to know her kindness was noticed and appreciated.

She smiled back as she proceeded to check my things saying “I caught him. He was almost at his car.”

Totally focused on the customer

but, for me, the lights were all on  her.

Initiative.

How many of us will sacrifice ourselves and our time

to step out of our comfortable box

to give to another?

To lend a hand

to help carry a load

to run an errand

to smile and spend some time.

Yes, this woman raised the bar of service

and I’m so glad that she did.

I’ll never forget it.

No, I don’t ever want to forget it.
