Shining Moments

Fun

Friends

Activities

Music

Yes, there was all these and more when I attended Vacation Bible School.

My first memories of VBS go back to when I was five years old.

I rode the bus with my brother.

Every day climbing those big steps to take me to an even bigger church.

A sea of strange faces

but activities and music and yes, eventually friends and fun.

And I remember well my fears when I ended up on the wrong bus

that didn’t take me home. Terror that  I will never forget.

Then there was the VBS in Kansas City, Missouri.

Once more LOTS of kids, activities, fun and music.

I’ll never forget the contest to see who could memories the most verses in one week.

I buried myself in my room and memorized whole chapters

then went in the next day to recite them to an adult.

It was something I knew that I could do

not like hitting a home run

or singing a solo.

End of the week

Yes, I won the prize

only to discover that the real prize was the treasure I had hid in my heart.

Years to come I am still blessed by knowing all those Bible verses.

Fast forward many years to the time I worked with first graders in VBS

and then 3’s and 4’s

and one year directed the program for our church.

Just the sound of the opening chorus would excite me.

Watching the eager boys and girls piling out of the cars every morning.

Hungry souls who needed to know that He is all He says He is.

That following Jesus pays

every time.

Then those happy years of taking my own little daughters toBibleSchool

and watching those patient workers teach the children day after day.

Shining Moments.

The fastest week in the year.

Always coming to an end long before we were ready.

Well, it’s that time again.

All over the place I see signs ofVacationBibleSchool

and I hear excited voices.

O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing

My great Redeemer’s praise.

Boys and girls coming together again to laugh and learn of His Love.

Yes, brings back a lot of memories for me.

How about you?

Did you ever attend VBS?

Just leave a comment.

I look forward to hearing from you.
