Shining Moments

As I pulled out the old recipe card

to make cheesy potatoes

my thoughts wandered back to her.

Although we had only lived close by for a short time

I will never forget

her sweetness.

Yes, so much love and energy packed into this dear woman.

She gave me the card before I left

And from then on I have made that recipe

maybe hundreds of times.

How I missed her.

Wouldn’t it be nice to hear her voice again, I thought.

So today,

I reached for the phone and called her.

“Hello,” I heard. Music to my ears.

“This isSharon. FromVirginia.”

“Oh my,” she answered. “How wonderful.”

For the next few minutes we were lost in time.

Catching up.

She is now going slower but still getting out.

How I’d love to just come in your door

and share a nice cup of tea with you, I shared.

You have no idea, she said.

This is the best Christmas gift ..

just to hear your voice.

A lump filled my throat.

Why I’d give her the moon if I could.

So precious to me.

I love you, she said.

Oh I love you too, I responded.

So true. Though the years have come and gone

our love for each other stays strong.

By the time I placed the phone down

my heart was overflowing with joy.

A shining moment.

Two hearts touching

and warmed by the other.

Christmas is love.

God reaching down to man in love.

Angels proclaiming Glory to God in the Highest

and on earth peace, good will to men. Luke 2:14

Yes, angels sang it.

Shepherds heard it. Do you?

Many, many people are alone these days.

Some of them elderly

Some of them not. They hunger for a call, a visit.

Maybe there is someone that you need to call.

Make this Christmas the best Christmas ever.

Reach out

and touch your world with love.

Yes, just do it.

“It’s the best Christmas gift ever,” I heard her say.

So sweet. I treasure those moments.

That special time with her today.

Shining Moments

Christmases of long ago blend

with Christmas now.

Memories of delicious popcorn balls

and boxes of  hard candy.

Christmas programs.

The sound of my older brother

reciting Matthew 1:18-25.

Whenever I hear those familiar words

‘now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise’

my eyes fill with tears

and I remember that Christmas program

of long ago.

He was dressed as a shepherd and I an angel.

Shining moments of long ago.

And then my thoughts skip to

beautiful Christmas concerts

as I hear certain songs.

Amy Grants ‘Emmanuel’

and my Mom singing ‘There’s a Song in the Air’.

For a few years we had a Christmas Eve program

at home. Just my family.

My younger brother played the trumpet;

my older one the clarinet.

I’d play the piano and my mom sang.

My sister sang=

Yes, I can still hear her singing

“It’s Beginning To Look A lot Like Christmas’.

Precious, shining moments of long ago

that brighten my life today.

All of it

reminding me of the tender bonds of love

gifts from the Father’s Hand.

The old wagon that dates back to when my father was a child

holds teddy bears and my old tiny tears doll.

My heart holds it all.

Along with the old memories and the ones of today

the golden thread of Christmas

shines brightly.

“Glory to God in the highest,

and on earth peace  to men on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2:14

Let the wonder of the memories surround and fill you this Christmas.

And through it all

sense His Love and everlasting care

for you.

Make this Christmas your best Christmas ever, won’t you?

Take time to be quiet

Take time to be still

and enter softly  into the heart of Christmas.

Shining Moments

She works long hours

day after day

struggling to make a few dollars.

Hiding it carefully away.

Planning Christmas for her young children.

Yes, day after day she comes to work.

Weary with the additional hours

and longing to somehow find the time

to buy a few things for her little ones.

A game here.

A small trike.

Some blocks.

Not much by this world’s standards

But she knows her kids will be happy.

Day after day she works at that counter

and sometimes wishing that people would realize

how very hard she tries to do her job.

I noticed her as I stood in line the other day.

She and so many like her

need our kindness

and care.

It can be a very hard time for many.

Carrying heavy burdens.

Struggling to make ends meet.

My heart longs to lift their burdens

and to whisper to them

that Jesus knows and cares.

So much that I can’t do

But this I can.

When it came my turn

I met her eyes and gave her a warm greeting.

I smiled and encouraged her.

Suddenly her face broke into the biggest smile.

Yes, just a simple word

makes a huge difference to those who are working so hard.

Let’s give what we can

and let Him use us

to make this Christmas

the best ever.

In our corner of the world

let’s light the way

so that others might know

that He is the reason for the season.

Yes, joy to the world

the Lord has come.
