Shining Moments

I had no idea it existed.

No, thought that there was such a beautiful place in the world.

It was only by chance that we turned right instead of left.

There we saw it. I can remember that day like it was yesterday.

The ocean sparkled with diamonds

   and shone with glorious beauty.

What I thought would only be a few hours turned into

3 days at the beach in York Beach Maine.

From then on we returned year after year.

Although the huge rock upon which I saw with my blanket, Bible and glass of coke

   Never seemed to change

my life did.

I’ll never forget the year that Noelle came to Maine.

Three years old with laughing eyes

she fell in love with the ocean.

A love affair that continues to this day.

Jenny came for the first time when she was  five and oh what a grand trip that was.

Ice cream cones. Walking everywhere as we stay without a car.

Breakfasts of blueberry muffins, coffee and hot chocolate.

Long walks on the beach.

Long talks with the wind in our face and the seagulls overhead.

For a short time the most difficult decision is what flavor of ice cream to have.

Ah, sweet bliss.

All gifts from the Father’s Hand.

I never take it for granted. No, I know it is a gift of His Love.

All of life is, isn’t it?

But to have that time by the seaside with my two girls

   and just laugh and play

   it is simply marvelous.

Each time we leave with a solemn moment as we say goodbye.

If the Lord will, we shall return, we say.

Days go by

     Followed by weeks and months.

We save and save filling the tea-pot with all our small change.

Months sometimes go to years.

  at the right time

  at His Time

we know to start packing. We are going to Maine.

When I am a very old lady

I can imagine myself walking that sandy beach

        remembering voices from the past

           reflecting upon dreams

              and longings and hopes.

Always rejoicing that in His Way He provides.

His Thoughts are not our thoughts.

His Ways are not ours.

We can trust the gentle moving of His Hand although many times we do not understand.

But with each splash against those rugged rocks

rocks that have seen so much to time

He shouts His Glory

He whispers our name

and my heart responds in grateful praise.

Whether at home

or by the sandy beach, He is Lord.

Let every knee bow before Him and worship Him alone.

Shining Moments

It’s so hard to leave, I thought walking the beach for the last time.

Only God knew when we would be able to return.

So for now I had to take lots of pictures

and memorize the sights and sounds.

Wish I could bottle the air and bring it home with me.

My eyes scanned the beach again

   resting on the stones.

Stones that represented years and years of smoothing by the powerful ocean.

Stones that reminded me of the one I sat on every day.

Stones that each held a story.

Yes, one stone would be just right.

I walked over and bent down to pick up one.

Whew, it was heavy

but no store-bought souvenir could compare with it.

And I knew just where I would put it.

Well I ended up taking home a few stones that year

carefully placing them in the front of our home.

Day after day I pass them

   remembering my bit of beach

remembering the sight, sounds and special family times.

For some they might just look like stones.

But for me

    and my girls

they remind us of a beautiful time

and our little heaven on earth.

Life often gives us times when we can’t take it all.

Yes, there is no way that we can hold onto everything.

That would be as foolish as trying to bag all the ocean

But we can choose something here

                             a reminder there

So that we don’t forget in the passing of time.

The seashell on my desk reminds me of Maine.

That beautiful picture reminds me of my dear friend.

Those stones in front of our home

reminds me of God’s gift of a place.

Take the time to hold and cherish.

Take time to give thanks for all God’s gifts.

He lovingly surrounds us with beautiful touches of heaven

for those who have eyes to see them.

My soul fills with deep emotion when I gaze out upon the vast ocean

and it sings and sings.

What causes your soul to sing?

Shining Moments

In a world of big sunflowers

one little violet has just as much worth.

Years ago I lived in the country

where there were acres to walk. Plenty of grass to mow.

Leaves to pile in the fall.

and millions of violets covering the lawn in the summer.

I remember stooping down and drinking in their delicate beauty.

laying down in the violets looking up into the big sky.

The smallness I felt only heightened my awareness of God’s greatness.

When I am small

He shows Himself greater than all.

It is easy to feel invisible,

                                even discarded

in our world where beauty, money and position count.

There is a pervading sense of unworthiness among many.

I remember grabbing a $10 bill from my purse

and asking my girls, “How much is this?”

“$10,” they’d say together.

Then I’d crumbled it,

                   step on  it,

                      even cover it with dirt

and then hold up the bill again saying,

“What’s it worth now?”

They’d look at it and then back at me

“Right,” I’d say. “It doesn’t matter how much you are beaten down,

      Mistreated or ignored,

your value is still great. That doesn’t change.”

Created in love,

made in the image of God,

born with value and a purpose.

Touched by His Greatness you are just as important as another.

Sunflowers or violets

   they all serve their Creator.

   remember who you are

and live the life Hs has given you with all you’ve got.

How I wish for one more afternoon when I could lay again

surrounded by all those beautiful violets

but if I can’t the memory shines brightly for me

  reminding me

  to be who  you are

to be the best you can be

to never think you are less.

No, in your Father’s eyes you are loved with an everlasting Love

and underneath are the everlasting arms. (Deut 33:27)

Precious truths, don’t you think?
