Shining Moments

Powerful truth that changes lives!

Focus on the good

and the beautiful

and what is going well

and we will see more.

The other side is also true.

Focus on the negative

the disappointing

the ugly and tragic

and we will see more.

A friend of mine recently posted this stunning photo

of our Virginia countryside on Facebook.

It touched me

and reminded my again of why I love this area so much.

Beauty all over

Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.

But

although surrounded by beauty on every side

It is all too easy to not see it

to become blinded

as it were

in the routine of life

and the overwhelming challenges we all face.

Wherever you live

there is beauty to be found.

Just look

it’s there.

Those powerful words come to mind.

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true,

       whatsoever things are honest,

       whatsoever things are just,

       whatsoever things are pure,

        whatsoever things are lovely

        whatsoever things are of good report;

if there be any virtue and if there be any praise

       think on these things.”
 Have you tried it?

When I discipline my thoughts to focus on the true,

the lovely, the pure, etc.

it changes my perspective.

I see even more that is true, lovely, pure, etc.

It is sad but true that we can be surrounded by thousands of gifts

of beauty and goodness

but fail to see them.

So let’s open our eyes

let’s look all around us

and intentionally see what we can see.

All the while praising the One

Who has gifted us in so many ways.

Beauty all around us.

In the smile of a  child,

the song of a bird,

the rolling hillside

the kind action of a friend.

Beauty that shines brightly

reminding us that we are never alone.

There is One Who walks with us.

Shining Moments

Some people want to have guns for protection.

Others trust in their Neighborhood Watch, or the police or another protection service.

But I have discovered something that is better than all of these.

The name of Jesus.

Months ago when all of a sudden our home began to rattle and shake

and I knew that there was danger.

        I whispered His Name.

               Jesus.

Yes, that was the first thought that came to mind.

I was puzzled, scared, confused

        all wrapped into one.

I jumped to protect my girls from whatever was happening.

              Jesus

The One Who promises to always be there for me

“I am with you always…”Matthew 28:20

              Jesus

The One to Whom I ran for protection and safety

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death

I will fear no evil, for You are with me.” Psalms 23:4

              Jesus

Within seconds we raced down the stairs and outside

where a crowd of neighbors was gathering.

Looking back at our homes we watched

      Holding our breaths

          Holding each other

But in the midst of the earthquake

                       Jesus was there.

Then all was still.

We waited.

     Watched

          and then begin to move.

An earthquake people said

My heart was still racing. It took me a long time to quiet.

But I realized again

the power of saying His Name

of calling out to the One and Only One

for help in time of need.

He tells us to come to Him all the time.

“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” James 4:8

He longs to have a personal relationship with each one of us

     always

and every minute of the day.

 Whisper His Name.

Right where you are just now.

Jesus

Jesus

How precious is that Name.

Truly it is the sweetest Name in all the world.

No matter how you feel

      Say His Name

No matter what you are facing

      Speak His Name

Somehow in His amazing Love He draws near to us when we whisper His Name.

His Name gives us power in the midst of horrible tragedy

                    and unexpected terror

His Name gives us peace as we wait by the bedside of a sick one

 Jesus. Jesus. Jesus

There’s just something about that Name

His Name shines brighter than anything here on earth.

Lighting the Way for us to know Him.

When There Seems To Be No Hope

They walked the road with heavy hearts and weary bodies. The past few days had left them without hope and sunk in discouragement. Their leader, the One they had looked to with so much hope, had been crucified and now they were left. Alone.

Nothing mattered.

Nothing.

But suddenly One joined them on their journey. He listened to them and reminded them of Scripture. They had no idea Who it was. They asked this Stranger to stay with them and then while He broke the bread their eyes were suddenly opened.

They saw Him, the One they loved.

Their eyes met His and they knew it was He.

And although He disappeared their lives were never the same.

They knew beyond a shadow of a doubt, that He lived.

God still loves to break into our lives and reveal Himself. Frequently it is when we are at the end of our ropes and we see no way to go on, that He gives us a glimpse of the Holy.

I sensed it myself walking through the crowded Frankfurt airport carrying my six month old newly adopted daughter and loads of luggage.

Weariness overtook me and suddenly I knew, there was no way that  I could make it to the gate. Time was running out.

Brushing the hair back from my face and whispering a prayer for help, I turned around and asked for assistance.

But one after another passed by without a glance in my direction.

Fear arose as I desperately looked all around for help.

As I turned back, readjusted the heavy load, I started walking.

I will never forget the kind man who came to my side, scooped up my bags like they were golf balls and moved quickly forward.

I raced to keep up with him calling the number of the gate.

As we arrived at the gate he put down my bags, gave me and smile and disappeared through the crowds.

It was a special time when He showed up. For hours as I sat in the plane heading back to the States my heart praised Him.

Love was there for me. Would always be there.

Love crucified arose and still wins the victory. Fears turned to praise. Hope restored.

Our greatest difficulty in life is only another opportunity for us to get fresh glimpse of His Love.

Look for Him along life’s journey today.

He is there.

In the midst of the ordinary.

Turning it into an experience of Grace.
