Shining Moments

As I drove my car down the winding road

    on my way to work

my eyes noticed an all too familiar sight up ahead.

About 20 of them.

Slowly moving ducks walking across the street.

Like confused children some walking forward

   but others turning in circles

and a few walking back to the side from which they had come.

I glanced at the clock

    as I slowed the car.

I had not expected this delay

I had not anticipated being slowed by ducks

and I certainly didn’t like it

but I had a choice as to how I handled it.

I’ve watched them.

Some people keep right on driving

even killing a duck or two in the process.

Their agenda is more important.

That’s what drives them.

Others sit and blow their horn hoping

   to somehow scare the ducks.

My approach is to slow to a crawl

    but keep moving forward.

Inch by inch.

The ducks see the car and gradually ‘get it’.

Little by little they waddle out of the way

leaving me room to keep moving forward.

Life is sometimes like

   an encounter with those ducks.

Things seem to be going smoothly.

You know where you are going

and have it timed just right

   according to your agenda

but then you see ducks in your way.

That’s where you have a choice!

Are you going to blow your horn

    or your top?

Give voice to your opinions?

Or will you just plow ahead sometimes regardless of the one in your way?

Maybe we don’t have to do either.

Maybe we can keep moving forward

     ever so slowly

accomplishing our desire in a peaceful way.

Don’t let the ducks get to you.

Sure they can be annoying but they teach us much about patience

and peace

   and purpose.

Barriers in our path if seen as opportunities

only serve to make us better.

Let’s join hands and continue on

knowing that there’s plenty to do today.

Let’s keep our eyes on the goal

and a song in our heart.

Will you join me?

Shining Moments

Cut it out!

   Scoop it clean!

      Carve it just right

so that the light can shine through.

Reminds me of life.

Cut it out

   things that needed to go

difficult moments in which the Lord took out

salty tear moments that I will never forget.

And the Master Designer continues to shape my life

   and yours.

While we are going through it

   the process is hard. Excruciating.

Cut it out! Carve it! Scoop it clean moments!

Ouch my spirit screams

But He continues to work

    taking out

to make room for what He will put in.

taking out to make room for His Love and Grace to shine through.

    taking out some more.

Shaping to make us for His Purpose

The purpose for which we were born in the first place.

Using those strengths

Making room for those  qualitites to have a chance.

Scoop it clean of clutter and the unnecessaries.

Cut it out!

   Scoop it clean!

     Carve it just right!

That seems to be a marvelous picture of His Transforming Grace

  in our lives.

Day by Day.

Moment by moment.

But then there comes the time

When I sense He steps back from His creation and says,

      “Just beautiful!”

His Light begins to flicker brightly in the dark world.

Yes, just beautiful.

That’s how you look to Him today

   wherever you are.

Surrender to the process knowing that there is a reason.

His Loving Hands can be trusted.

Cut it out!

   Scoop it out!

      Carve it some more!

He’s making your life

one that will shine like none other.

    always involves letting go

       and receiving.

Keep your eyes on the purpose

while gazing into His Eyes of Love.

Rise And Shine

“Rise and shine.”

Every morning without fail my mom used to call these words to me as I slept in my cozy bed upstairs. I used to anticipate them when I heard her slippered feet coming down the hall in the early morning. She used to knock lightly on my door and then say them with just the slightest inflection in her voice.

“Rise and shine.”

I remember smiling in spite of myself at the morning ritual. Somehow it made getting up a little bit easier as a child.

Life can be difficult.

Life can present numerous challenges.

But when we focus on ‘rising and shining’ it changes things.

There is something specific we can do. We can get up.

So many folks are practically sleep walking today. Do you know what I mean?

They go from one day to another in a daze like attitude.

Punching the clock.

Grabbing the next meal.

Folding the clothes.

Paying the bills.

But all joy is gone. The sparkle of life missing.

Long ago Jesus spoke to the lame man on the side of the path “Get up. Pick up your mat and walk.” (John 5:8)

Powerful words. Penetrating question that gets to the heart of the matter.

He challenged him to put effort even into his walking by picking up his mat. Obedience.

I sense so often that He still whispers to each of us “GET UP.”

He says it to me when my body is weary and I’d much rather curl  up with a good book.

Rise to a world that needs your presence. Rise to a life where you do make a difference.

Rise to a world knowing that you are important.

Rise and shine.

Shine knowing that you are never alone.

Shine knowing that He will strengthen you to live one day at a time.

Shine basking in the incredible wonder that you are deeply loved.

It’s awesome, isn’t it?

Rise and shine today, my friends.

Peace be with you.
