Do You Believe That Change Is Possible?

What do some people do it?

They’ll never grow rich.

Never be famous.

No applause.

No promotions.

Hmm, let me tell you why.

A very long time ago there was an elderly man who came to my church.

I was little and shy. Maybe six years old.

And the world seemed so big and scary.

Sunday after Sunday when he’d see me at church

he’d put his wrinkled hand in his pocket and pull out a yellow chiclets box.

I’d put out my cup shaped hand and he’d carefully pour in a few tiny white pieces of gum

and smile at me.

And for that moment

I was visible. A real person. And gradually this shy, little girl began to smile and feel like she belonged.

Today more than fifty years later I remember and am grateful for his beautiful act of care.

Again and again I have received a special kindness

and usually all my words don’t seem enough to communicate my heart’s gratitude.

But people are all that matters. And love. Yes, love is forever.

It takes so little to bring cheer to another

and life can be so very hard. The journey so difficult at times.

But all it takes to really be fulfilled

is just a thought

and maybe a little time and a very little money

and suddenly someone’s day is different. Their life a little brighter.

A loaf of bread here.

Some flowers there.

A check to support three darling children in Brazil, Columbia and Peru.

A cup of coffee.

Simple things.

Won’t you join me?

Let’s grab  hands together

to love this world in His Name.

People all around us.

Sadness behind their eyes.

Weariness and often discouragement.

Come.

Let’s reach out today and touch another’s life.

Threads of gold among the ordinary acts of life.

Pearls that glisten with lasting beauty.

Ignore the voices telling you it’s a waste

for nothing you do in His Name is ever wasted.

Follow the Singer and join in line….

move into your world one neighbor at a time

write it. sing it. tell  it.

and gradually you, too, will see.

He makes everything beautiful in His time.

Four Simple Words That Changed Everything

At the time it hardly grabbed my attention.

My heart was broken in a zillion pieces so I didn’t see the significance.

Empty. Dashed dreams.  Pain beyond words.

Never in a million years did I ever think I would walk this lonely path.

Divorce.

I remember the kindness of the man who listened that day to my heart.

Like soothing ointment on a deep gash, he softly spoke words of hope and encouragement.

“You could always adopt.”

That was it.

Four simple words.

At the time I pushed them away.  That idea didn’t fit the vision of my life.

White cape cod with a picket fence around it. Happy children looking out the windows,

A mother and a father.

No, it didn’t fit what I thought was God’s plan for my life.

So at that time after shaking my head and making some dismissive remark

I never gave any more thought to it.

But sometimes –

Many times

We have no idea the significance of a simple conversation

or phrase

or word.

Four months went by. An ordinary day.

Still empty. Hurting. Struggling to heal. To go on.

Suddenly those four words came to mind –

Seemingly out of nowhere.

You can always adopt.

Strange but this time I listened

and wrestled within.

Me? Me, Lord? Could that possibly be Your Will?

And that was the beginning of my long journey to adopt.

A journey that led to Russia.

A journey that showed me the Father’s Love in an unmistakable way –

healing my broken heart and bringing beauty for ashes in so many ways.

Four simple words.

So I ponder again our simple, day in day out conversations and writings.

We never know, do we,

the impact we are having on another life?

Speaking and writing behind the veil so to speak

our insight is limited

but nothing is insignificant.

Words are remembered whether spoken or read.

Ideas are planted for good or for bad.

So may I embrace each day with a sense of the sacredness of life

and speak and write with understanding, wisdom and compassion.

Who knows the very power our words might have to change another’s life!

Humbling. Awesome.

Guided by the Unseen One.

Used for His Divine Purpose.

One conversation can change everything.

The steps of good men are directed by the Lord. He delights in each step they take. Psalm 37:23sunrise december 1

One Single Red Rose

It was an ordinary day

turned extraordinary in a second.

When he handed me the single red rose suddenly

it was as if  the world glowed with brilliant light.

He had no way of knowing. To him it was a rose.

But to me it was a glorious, gorgeous, beauty.

As I held the crimson beauty memories of other red roses came to mind.

Each one significant.

Each one unique.

Each one a cherished gift. But that was then and this is now.

Fragrant beauty of all flowers.

Majestically spreading its rich aroma all around.

One single rose.

Gracing my life with beauty.

Today.

The power of one.

My life – a rose.

Like light shining through the fog of confusion.

Wherever I am planted

blooming in His garden. Blooming in a slum.

It matters not.

Trusting His care and provision.

Knowing that there is a plan and a purpose

for this single rose.

Grateful to be His beauty.
