Shining Moments

The Farmers Market means many things. Fresh grown vegetables and fruit.

Grass raised chicken. Freshly made whole wheat bread and rolls.

The sounds of a violin playing.

People mingling.

Talking. Laughing.

Yes, so many things.

But above all of these

   I enjoy all the flowers.

     Hanging baskets.

         Freshly cut flowers.

As I walked around a corner of our local market

Purples and whites met my eyes.

We walked over all the while scanning the delightful arrangements.

When you can’t choose to take everything

     The choice is hard.

But the bright, cheerful phlox caught my attention.

Many years ago we had a cottage in Camptown

where our family spent many a weekend.

Behind the cottage there were gardens.

Rows and rows of flowers.

I remember walking the paths and savoring the sweet smells.

Of all the flowers

the deep pink phlox remain in my memories.

Later

   when we left that place

my folks dug up some of the phlox.

Then when we moved south to Virginia

those same phlox flowers came with us.

Today they still bloom year after year bringing such happiness.

“I’ll take some purple and white phlox.

I told the kind lady from Wollam Gardens.

She carefully wrapped them up in orange tissue paper

    including packets of Chrysal.

“Put a little of that in the water and you’ll have blooming phlox for days.”

How delightful.

So when we came home I got out a special deep blue vase,

added water and along with some Chrysal

and then placed in each phlox.

Beautiful, I thought, stepping back to look at them.

Another gift.

A shining moment.

In the midst of a hot summer season

these bright flowers add a touch of grace to the whole room.

Memories of yesterday

     gifts of God’s grace

         and pleasures for today.

How gracious of God

To weave our todays with golden threads from the past.

Always reminding us

Yes, constantly whispering His Forever Love in a language that we will recognize

     is His,

Shining Moments

You’re worth it!

Absolutely. No question about it.

Your value is beyond my ability language

There was a time when I showed that to my sweet daughter.

She was about 4 at the time.

    Cute.

      Very sensitive.

          Creative.

One afternoon she worked hard making me a necklace.

I was touched when she gave it to me.

String. Plastic letters on it saying ‘I Love Mommy’.

   Heart touching.

Immediately I went to put it on.

A bit tight as it went over my head

    but it fit.

Her eyes glowed as she looked at my wearing her newest creation.

Later when I turned to go into work

    she noticed the necklace

        still hanging around my neck.

“You still have on that necklace, Mommy,” she giggled.

  I must have looked funny.

“I certainly do and I will enjoy having it on all afternoon,”

I said giving her a hug.

“Uh but what will people say?” she wondered.

Her worried eyes met mine.

“Well, I don’t know,

guess they will think I have a special daughter.”

I wore that precious necklace with pride that afternoon

  and although some smiled

  that didn’t matter.

No, my daughter was worth it.

The love and time she put into the simple necklace meant everything to me.

That’s how God sees us.

We are worth it.

Lovingly He created us.

    Lovingly He watches over us.

He takes joy in our creations and tenderly cherishes our simple efforts.

“You, my child,

       are worth it,” He whispers.

“That’s why I sent my Son to die for you!”

Today

    Tomorrow

         and every tomorrow

              you are worth it.

Thank you, Father, for your incredible Love.

Shining Moments

I just love those ‘firsts’.

The first step.

The first word.

Her first tooth.

Her first airplane ride.

Her first day of kindergarten.

Gulp.

For with each first I saw glimpses of the young woman she was becoming.

I saw her independence. That glorious ‘I love Jesus so much’ spirit.

And I quietly praised God

and thanked Him for this high and holy calling.

Her first sleepover. Her first time at camp.

That first call home excitedly telling me that she was having a grand time.

Her graduation from preschool

to fifth grade and then high school.

Sigh. The time goes by so quickly. Savor the moments.

Her first pair of glasses.

    and then contacts.

Then getting her ears pierced while holding that smudged and wrinkled

index card with those familiar words of faith

‘I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me.’ Phil. 4:13

Giggles and smiles.

Shouts of joy.

Fast forward to high school.

Youth groups and jobs.

Dogsitting and caring for children. Learning and laughing.

Growing more confident with each step of the journey.

Bible well-worn and favorite verses marked.

God’s grace so evident

    Sometimes confident

Sometimes with fear but always going forward.

First laptop

First acceptance to college.

First year started with apprehension and questions.

First year completed. More celebrations and cheers.

Firsts…

    we all experience them.

Oftentimes with others cheering us wildly along the way.

We all know that life is filled with challenges

   but cherish those firsts.

Don’t take any of them for granted.

Get out the special dishes and crystal

Light the candles and have ice cream.

Moment by moment He’s promised to walk with us.

Listen to His cheers over you

Catch the beauty of His singing

 as He celebrates your accomplishments.

Let the wonder of His Love surround you with special love notes.

And if by chance you know someone who is experiencing a first today

    join with them in celebration.

It’s a never to be repeated achievement!

This mother’s heart is overflowing

to be able to once again

     celebrate another ‘first’.
