How Can I Sing When I’ve Lost All Hope?

She looked at me with tears coursing down her cheeks.

“After all I’ve been through, I just don’t know how to go on.”
Her life was a story of tragedy and loss. Her husband had left her with three young children. Their home had burnt down and on top of it she had just lost her job.

“I used to believe.” She said twisting the tissue in her hand. “Yes, I used to tell others

that they would be alright. But I honestly have lost all hope.”

We spoke for a long time that day.

It didn’t seem to make sense. But then sometimes life doesn’t.

I had no profound words to offer. No quick fix to suggest.

But I gave her what I could.

Hope.

Hope that something would change. That she would see her well in the desert as Hagar did. You can read the story in Genesis 16. Hagar had fled with her son and was watching her son die. She had no hope. But then God stepped in.

When God steps in everything changes.

Fevers drop. Cancers disappear. Money appears from nowhere. A job is offered from a seemingly impossible source. A prodigal child calls home.

Yes, there is always hope.

He is with you right now. Longing to comfort you.  Breathing within you fresh courage

and a new song.

Remembering that causes me to sing this morning.

Look not at how things are today. No, look into the face of the One Who still calms the storms and places wells in the deserts.

Be encouraged, my friend. There is always hope.
